Grasmere Parking |
Loughrigg Fell |
Modern, numberplate-recognition parking cameras recognise your car entering the car park and the systme charges you at the end of your stay, payment by card is available. Normally, I don't pay to park as I arrive whilst there are still places to park where there are no charges, so this is a little unsettling. I wonder what would happen if you covered your numberplates just after you left the public road and revealed them again before rejoining the highway?
Wooded Lane
Leaving Grasmere on the Red Bank road, we entered the lane to the fell which is opposite the boat landings and tearoom (Wainwright's Silver How 4). We have all been up Silver How previously, but not all at the same time. How exciting is that?
Stone Arthur
The view in retrospect is that of Stone Arthur on the other side of Grasmere. Just for a while, we have some refreshing sunny intervals.
Helm Crag and Seat Sandal
Wainwright instructs readers to "forget about Silver How for a few minutes here and halt to admire the beautiful specimen trees in these lower pastures". I think we're a little above "here" at this time, but the varied view is very enjoyable.
Karen & Molly
One is thinking "are we nearly there yet?" and the other is wondering what we have stopped for. You decide.
Rydal Water
is further away. They could cut down all those trees between the lakes and build a large car park.

Descent Route
We're still on Silver How 4 in Wainwright's Central Fells and aiming for the path down to Allan Bank; I'd brought my map, but not my glasses - we'll probably find the way.
